Alarming report - Nearly one in six living on the poverty line

Poverty threatens Germany: some 12.8 million people are at risk of poverty, according to a study - almost one in six. Particularly affected are singles. Young people also have a hard time.

In Germany, nearly one in six is at risk of poverty. In 2010, 12.8 million people had so little money available, that they are at risk of poverty, such as the Federal Statistics Office in Wiesbaden announced. This corresponds to a share of 15.8 percent of the population. The ratio thus rose in comparison to the year 2009 (15.6 percent) and 2008 (15.5 percent) slightly. Risk of poverty was in 2010, who is less than 952 euros per month at their disposal.

The greatest risk of poverty in 2010 were single mothers or fathers and their children. 37.1 percent of them were at risk of poverty. The rate was almost as high among people living alone under age 65 with 36.1 percent. In households with two adults under age 65, the rate was 11.3 percent. The poverty rate of children who were younger than 18 years old, stood at 15.6 percent. In elderly people aged 65 and over the rate was 14.2 percent.

Women were overall more likely to suffer from poverty than men: In the male population, the percentage was 14.9 percent, 16.8 percent among women. Statistics for 13,512 households and 24,220 people aged 16 and over were asked about their income and living conditions.
