How To Remove Facial Hair?

Almost all parts of the body have hair including the face. Hair on the face is particularly annoying to women. It may make them feel unfeminine, unattractive, cause stress and loss of confidence. It is normal for the face to have fine downy hair. When this hair growth is coarse and thick, the problems start. This excessive hair growth may be due to hereditary factors, hormonal imbalances or as a reaction to certain medicines.

How to remove facial hair? Well, there are many ways to get rid of it. We give you the do’s and don’ts, including the pros and cons for this delicate zone to help you choose the right method for you.

How to get rid of facial hair
1. Shaving
Unless you’re a man, put down the razor. Shaving creates blunt edges which make the hair appear thicker and it’s extremely temporary. It’s okay for your body, but not your face. So don’t be fooled by these little tiny razors in cute colors marketed to women.

2. Depilatories (Hair Removal Creams)
Some women use Nair or another depilatory on their faces to remove facial hair. These hair removal treatments use chemicals to dissolve the hair. If you think a depilatory is right for you, be sure to test it out on a small patch of skin before you use it on a larger part of your face.

A strong alkaline product breaks down hair so that it can be easily wiped off. A little bit better than shaving the face because it doesn’t usually create as sharp of tip like from using a razor. Results will only last you for a couple days at the most. Just be careful because hair removal creams contain harsh chemicals and can burn your skin, especially the delicate area of the face. Try something like Nair Sensitive for the Face

I personally, would never use a depilatory because I’m afraid a harsh chemical could irritate my skin. So proceed with caution.

3. Threading
This ancient hair removal method using a string is highly sought after for precise eyebrow shaping and facial hair removal that can last up to six weeks. It’s quick, uses no chemicals and is generally inexpensive. A big plus is that if you can feel the hair, threading can remove it.

4. Waxing
There are at-home kits to help you remove facial hair using hot wax. But because there's the potential to get burned only do this with the help of an adult! Usually, the kits come with fabric strips and a tub of wax you can heat in the microwave or on the stove. Follow the directions carefully to avoid getting burned and to be sure you do this hair removal method properly. The intent is to pull the hair out by the root, so that it grows back slowly and not so thick. Usually, you only have to wax about once a month. Also, keep in mind, waxing DOES hurt, and your skin can be red for a couple hours afterward. Don’t do it before going out with your friends!

5. Sugaring
There are two types of sugaring: paste and a gel. Both types are made with natural ingredients like lemon juice, sugar and water leaving you hair-free for up to six weeks. Many people favor sugaring over waxing because it’s less painful, gentler to the skin and the traditional method using paste can remove hair as short as 1/16”, compared to the 1/4" minimum hair length needed for waxing.

6. Coil Hair Removers
Some people may opt for tweezers for removing facial hair. These would pull the hair out from the root and re-growth would not be as fast as it would be in shaving. Using tweezers can be a simple alternative for a few scattered facial hairs and for eyebrow shaping. This method can however be time consuming and painful for an area with condensed thicker hair.

Coil hair removers work in the same way as tweezers and they look like tiny slinkies. They grab the hair and pull it out from the root. These work faster than tweezers because they can pull at many hair follicles at once.

Threading is an ancient hair removal method which is more popular in Asia. A string is used to remove hair without artificial fragrances or other chemicals that might irritate skin. It is not completely painless, but it works very well around the eye area because threading eyebrows does not remove the top layer of the skin like waxing does. Moreover the results may last for up to 6 weeks. Threading is known to be easy, quick and inexpensive.

7. Laser / IPL Hair Removal
Laser facial hair removal treatment is not exactly permanent but it can offer long lasting results. Each session would cost around 150-200GBP and several would be required to achieve the best possible results. It is also necessary to find a qualified professional, but even then, one runs the risk of skin irritation. It would take around a couple of months before one can notice real results.

8. Electrolysis
Electrolysis on the other hand works with very thin needles which inject small electrical shocks into the hair follicles destroying the hair root. It is a permanent hair removal treatment but as hair grows in various stages, several sessions are required before the procedure can generate satisfactory results. Using electrolysis on the face would cause some discomfort and there is always the chance that it may irritate or scar skin. Even though it can remove facial hair permanently it is very expensive.
